Come Worship in the Cult of Beauty

The current exhibition at the V&A museum The Cult of Beauty really sums up that romantic longing for beauty, nature and innocence that is reflected in art and fashion right now. Liberty has even made a window display inspired by the theme.

Ad campaigns such as the latest one from  French Connection channel a nostalgia for classicism, purity and pastoral pleasures. It distills the simple yet unearthly beauty of sunshine over a dewy meadow at dawn as seen on a faded Polaroid from the late sixties, early seventies…

I have totally bought into the idea of wearing my hair loose, kicking off my shoes and taking my lover for a picnic, me in a long ethereal white lace dress, him in a white suit and if possible a walking cane and a straw hat ( even if we swap outfits it  would work equally well ). After a session of laying splayed in the sun feeding each other sweet summer wine and dipping strawberries in cream I can take him for a ride on my steering wheel like Paul Newman in Buch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid. The dress that Katherine Ross is wearing in that scene is very summer 2011!

Another good inspiration for beautiful, arcadian summer living is the Swedish film Elvira Madigan from the sixties. The whole film generally dealing with bitter sweet atmopheres, barefoot lovers, sheerest white dresses and blonde tresses. The beautiful heroine´s signature look, a sixties take on fin de siècle. I warmly recomend it!

White sheer lace dresses demand either no underwear or something of an equal pale colour. Mimi Holliday´s new Crème de la Crème set is in a barely there shade of pearl and crisp snow white lace…

Reach for you parasol and pack your picnic basket, this spring we dress for an alfresco!
